As the supervisor of English Language Arts Literacy for the Township of Ocean School District, K-5, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2018-2019 school year.  As the new school year begins, our teachers are busily planning engaging lessons while also preparing to administer various district assessments.  In first grade, our teachers administer a phonological awareness test which is used as our universal screener for dyslexia.  The information contained in this letter will inform you of the New Jersey Dyslexia Law and the Township of Ocean District's screening process.

The Dyslexia Law, P.L. 2013, c210, was enacted by the New Jersey Legislature with the goal of improving the identification and remediation of reading disabilities.  This law requires that each school district screen students who have exhibited one or more potential indicators of dyslexia or other reading disabilities no later than the student's completion of the first semester of second grade.  The Township of Ocean Public Schools are screening in Grade 1 to fulfill the district's responsibilities in implementing this law.

Please note, it is not necessary for your child to prepare for this screening.  The district will automatically screen all students using district assessments administered by your school's teachers.  If your child's screening identifies a need for a comprehensive assessment for dyslexia, the building principal will be in contact with you.

For further information on dyslexia, please refer to the NJ Dyslexia Handbook.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
